Sends him a picture of her husband's memorial tablet and asks permission to have his poem "A Prayer" insribed, since her husband loved his poetry so much; tells him two stories about people she met who used her husbands memorial spot.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901).
